So I am getting a new Sendero SF ii that I will be customizing quite a bit. One question on the barrel length. The rifle comes with a 26 inch barrel. I am getting a muzzle brake built and installed which is going to add approximately 2 inches to the total length. Now is a 28 inch rifle barrel too long for everyday hunting? I could get a cap made for it but then again what would be the point of getting a brake made and installed if im just going to cap it off. Any thoughts would be great as I have no idea on this.

The Sender isn't exactly svelte as is, so it may not matter much. Do you hunt in thick bush?

Another thing to consider is a muzzle brake is not a good thing on a hunting rifle, unless you and all your hunting partners wear plugs. You will get permanent hearing damage from a single shot from a braked rifle with no protection.

Sometimes I hunt thick bush but I dont think I would be taking this to those areas, be one of my other rifles. This will be for an Alberta elk hunt in the fall, then my main hunting rifle for home in Nova Scotia. I hunt mostly open fields or really open clearings. The times I will hunt thick bush my .308 will be taken with me. I heard they are loud and will be wearing protection when shooting for sure.

Have you shot it without a brake? I'd try that first before adding one. Depending on caliber, you may not want/need it. 28" is pretty long for a general hunting use rifle.

Nope still never picked it up from the store yet. Should be getting it the next 2 weeks or so. Its a 300 win mag and although I have shot them before and dont mind the recoil, I just think it will be ascetically pleasing to have on the rifle. All for the looks the brake is.

Hmm, never heard of anyone adding a brake for looks, but it's your rifle. A Sendero in a 300 WM is a pussycat to shoot.

I have a brake on my 300 rum sendero..its long and heavy..but you learn to manage it..don't shoot it with out ear protection..my left ear rings 24hrs a day after one shot with 7mm stw with a brake

Good on ya, your rifle, you can always take the brake of if ya don't like it. I was going to put a brake on my old 45-70 but sold it before I did.
