Which is a over all better gun. I can't really vote because I don't own a Ruger. I do have experience with the Speedmaster and I really like it. The Remington Speedmaster is very accurate and durable, but I think it is more picky for ammunition. I actually killed a coyote with my speedmaster.

I have a 10-22 and had a 552 before, Really they are not comparable at all the Ruger is a simple, reliable, clip fed 22lr semi, the Remington is a unique tube fed semi that can fire shorts longs or long rifle ammo. My 552 would digest almost any ammo without prejudice including standard vel or high vel shorts, longs, and long rifles(as long as it was kept very clean) my favorite was remington subsonics they were almost silent. both my ruger and remington were made in the 1980's and build quality was about equal,I found the ruger to be more accurate, but what it all came down to for me was the ruger was easier to clean, and functioned better in cold snowy weather. I sure miss the ability to shoot shorts in a semi though . Some day I hope to pick up another 552 but I will not get rid of my ruger. Anyone have experience with the newer 552's how is the build quality now?

I had a mid 80s 552 and it was just as good as what Bob said. I found it to be more reliable than my 10/22 and much more accurate. With a 12x scope it would keep all shots
within a nickel with Long Rifle. It would eat just about as crappy a bulk ammo as I would feed it and CB longs were great through it which I didn't cycle but it worked manually.
I even think the tube mag is much easier to load too when you get how to hold the rounds you can sort of drop it in by the handful.

I no longer have my Speedmaster though and it has nothing to do with the fact I have a 10/22 now. I got if for $200 in box and sold it for $400 once I found out what they were worth.

A few years later I bought a 10/22 I don't find it as accurate out of the box, nor does it have the same lines or crisp trigger and it takes longer to load mind you its half the price new.
Im not really sure why people give them so much attention. Bring on the FLAMES !!!!

Well its because its wearing a kit so its customized just the way I want it and ive got multiple mags and we do some fun in house three gun at the club and allow rimfires so for me its a fun range gun.
Plus I never clean it and it just keeps going and going and going.
I move around a lot with guns so It may very well go out the door some day as I don't spray ammo like I used to.

The accuracy on the older speedmaster is amazing. I got my speedmaster for 50 bucks in great condition. There worth $400 now?

They are going for as much as $700 new at cabelas although I don't think they are worth that but they don't listen to me.

No yours is not worth 700 read again. Thats new, ive seen older ones actually sell in the 200-400 range

I own a 552 and It is a fabulous rifle. The full size frame feels better to me then the small ruger. The fact that it eats anything you feed it is pretty awesome too. If you have the chance to buy one I would. A ruger is easier to come by imo
