Anyone know what a Remington Sportsman 48, 12 gauge, 2 3/4 chamber, in good condition would sell for? I have seen a variety of examples but can't really nail down a fair price.

I haven't seen the gun in person so I'm not sure what the device at the end of the barrel is. Is it a compensator or poly choke? The seller doesn't know because the firearm belonged to his late father.

That is a Cutts compensator with a replaceable choke, I own several.
One choke I have is actually adjustable like the Polychoke, but I have them in IC, modified , full , AND turkey/ super full.
As far as price goes , it all depends on condition .
Absolute top end would be $400

Well, pre-Covid...the 11-48s in 12ga would sit a long time @ $300 and up. Some around $250 did too, one was $225 and I considered buying it for parts, it was a working gun.

Any other/lesser gauge and the pricing starts 2-3X that much. Not sure how/if the "Sportsman" 48s are the same?

Any idea if that compensator choke will handle steel shot? I'm going to guess it won't.
That is a full or Turkey ( super full ) choke, so no , I would not shoot steel with that one.
The forcing cone of the chamber however should be relieved as the older cones are very abrupt as opposed to modern chambers for steel.
For the amount of money involved a guy should be able to find cheap semi or pump already proofed for steel loads.

The Sportman name was much like the Gamemaster name for the 760 rifle or Woodsmaster for the 742 rifle. They are decent old guns but not pricey. I wouldn't throw more than $350 for one in really nice shape personally.

My 1148's and am missing the 16g that I recently acquired .410 28 and 12 here .all purchased for under $500

Any idea if they can still be found somewhere? I have one on a m37 12g barrel with a full choke but I’d love to get my hands on an IC and mod chokes for it.

You'll have to hunt for one. Contact long established gunsmithing shops, ad in the EE, etc. They do turn up.
