Remington Sportsman 58 Autoloader Information

I just picked up an older Remington 58 Sportsman. From what I have read it is their first autoloader shotgun. It has some neat features like gas port dialing with 3 little screw in plugs to adjust from clays to turkey loads. I was wondering if anyone else had one of these and how they liked them.

One thing since I haven't fired it but I did cycle some rounds through it, I notice that sometimes it seems to be a bit lazy and not want to snap shut (When unloaded if you manually #### it and let it spring forward it still has a lot of snap).

I am just wondering if it is because I am not actually firing it, which I will do this week and test it out. Hopefully it works good as it has a shorter barrel than my 870 and would make a great brush shotgun.

Does anyone know what the screw settings should be? I have it will one plug in right now as I plan on firing turkey loads through it. I figured for full sized loads one plug and for clays put in all three and just leave the one vent.
It is different than the "Dial a Duck" ones I have seen that have what appears to be a adjustable wheel. This just threads on tight and the guy told me just adjust it with the plugs til it works right.

I also read that you can drill out gas ports in the barrel and it will accept 870 barrels(I have 2 full length and plan on doing it for one of them) and turning it into a semi duck/geese/etc shotgun.

Here are some pics: Sorry for them being slightly dark the lighting in my rec room is always like this.

Either way I feel I got a fair deal on it and I don't have a semi shotgun so even if I have to put some work into it no biggy.

It was Remington's first gas-operated shotgun.

They made the Browning A5-based recoil operated Models 11 and 11-48 prior to that.

I did a bit of research on the 58. It's a sweet sounding shotgun. Have fun with it.

there should be a H designation for high velocity ammo and a L for Low velocity ammo on the mag. cap assembly .If your shooting 1 1/4oz or heavier field loads set it to H and L for ! 1/8oz and lighter.

I believe that is the "Dial a Duck" system. Mine have 4 port holes and 3 screw slugs. If you are firing heavy loads just put one it. If your are doing clays you put in all of them and leave one hole empty to vent gas. I will probably shoot it this weekend and let you know how it goes. Thanks.

The 58 is a light as one would like for a upland gun (kinda like an Ak gas design) but when you take it apart you will see right on the gas tube instructions of how to clean it! Follow them dry tube only!

You have a good light upland gun.

I own a 58 also,I think it shoots 2 3/4 only. It also has on the mag cap an H & L for heavy and light loads. It was my grandfathers gun that he got probably in the 50's.I know he shot this a s$#t load, I still shoot it today with no problems. I did replace the butt stock with an 870's because it was cracked. Great gun.

I have one also.. Previous owner had cut it down to around 20 inches and installed a poly choke.. gun works great and has bagged me a few ducks. I am refinishing the stock this week. Pics to come after all the hard work is done. :D

Nice shotgun youve got there! I just picked up a Sportsman 58 last weekend at Epps. I had a downpayment on a used 1100, but then I saw this for considerably cheaper in basically the same set up. Mine has a 25" vent rib barrel, 2 beads and fixed skeet choke. Looks like a nice shotgun. Cant wait to try mine out.

There is two settings: H for heavy, L for Light. This was a Remington made when Remington's were great. Yours looks a little chopped up, look for an original long barrel one and you won't be disappointed. I've got a 30" model 58 that can reach out and touch the sky (with lead that is).
