Just traded an SKS i had lying around for Remington sportsman 58 shotgun, took a couple shots with it didn't cycle properly, definitely needs to be taken apart and oiled... what ammo works for you guys and this gun? I was told it likes heavier rounds to cycle?

When I took my 58 apart it said do not oil on the mechanism inside the forend. I did soak the end cap in kroil. Seemed to help it had lots of carbon built up in the vent holes.

Make sure the dial is set to the loads used. i.e.: H for heavy or high brass loads L for light loads. Beware that some low brass loads can be heavy loaded. Looks like a Power Pac muzzle device on the end. Did it come with the screw in tubes? Use can use solvents to clean the gas piston area just make sure it is completely dry before firing. There is supposed to be a buffer in the back of the receiver for the bolt to strike. Pull the trigger assembly and see what kind of shape it is in. When clean and all parts in order the 58 is very reliable with all ammo.

It has lyman Cutts compensator on the front supposed to get the screw in chokes I'm supposed to get from the guy I got it from he just needs to find where he put them

My mistake. Not many aluminum bodied Cutts around. At least the wear on it would indicate it is aluminum. Make sure your barrel is a 58 barrel and not one off of an 870 they do interchange. The way the Cutts is installed is curious. Looks like the adaptor is forged as part of the barrel.

You should be able to shoot trap loads in it if the end cap is set for light loads. Mine does with no problem. Check the gas ports in the barrel. They may be plugged or, as has been stated, you may have an 870 barrel on it with no gas ports at all. A good cleaning would be a start. Maybe clarify what you mean by not cycling properly. Does it not open the bolt at all or does it open the bolt and not chamber another round? Open it halfway?

They are known to develop cracks in the receiver where the slot for bolt handle was milled.
I have one here with the crack, i wouldn't recommend using slugs.
Nice old guns all the same.

It's trying to eject shell but doesn't pull out enough to clear in the front for it to eject, so jams up, I'll clean and oil it see how it performs, it has the vent holes in Barrel just lots of carbon in tube
