hello

i am fairly new to guns, slowly trying to "build the herd". i have an opprotunity to purchase a remington sportsman 12 ga chambered in 2.75". it is by no means in great shape but the action is pretty slick and all the important stuff is in good shape. the serial number is w3812**m. any info would be great. if these are like the 870 then that means that i could put a dlask barrel on it and use it as my hiking gun.it also means that i could pretty much go in whatever direction i wanted to with it.

thanks

I have one from the mid-80's. Bought it when I was 16 so 1986.
It has a 3" chamber though.

They were Standard 870's without engraving and a plain stock.
This was before the Express.
They were called "Remington 870 Sportsman's"

They are excellent guns. Never had any issues with mine in the last 24 years and 1000's of rounds shot at birds and clays.

I have a remington 58 sportsman. It is the first remington semi auto. It has either a dial a duck or holes in the end of the gas port to adjust based on shooting (clays to heavy bird loads). I think it is a great gun once you figure out what loads go with what. For heavy loads only put one plug in for clay/target loads put a few more in til it will cycle the action. Gun soaks up lots of recoil and has a few interchanable parts with newer rems. That is all I really know about them but I like mine a lot.

thanks dinsdale

this is more the info that i am looking for seeing though that the gun i am looking at IS a PUMP action shotgun. am i right in guessing this means that the dlask barrels would fit and i could have myself a nice little hiking gun for a reasonable price. ?

Should. Can't say 100% though. I did write Remington many years ago to confirm that the Sportsman is a full 870.
I have buying an 18" - 18.5" barrel on my to do list as well as a +2 mag tube and new stock.
