I have a Springfield US Remington 03 -A3 ser.# 4208### is this a safe rifle for a 280 rem. build? Any info on this rifle would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Reb

You would be further ahead financially to sell this rifle and buy a purpose made .280 sporter like a Rem 700, Win M70 or Ruger M77.

Sporterizing an 03-A3 involves a lot of costs which would be well in excess of what you would pay for a purpose made sporting rifle already chambered for the .280. These would include purchasing and having a custom made barrel installed, metal refinishing, cost of a sporting stock, low scope safety and a custom trigger guard with hinged floorplate, alteration of the bolt handle and having the receiver drilled and tapped for a scope mount.

Glad you mentioned that. I'm always looking for sportered 03-A3s or actions or receivers or part rifles for rebuild projects. I've got a couple of complete 03-A3 parts sets on hand waiting for 03-A3 restoration projects.

It already has a new bbl, trigger, bolt, drilled and tapped, ramline stock and metal finnished flat back.
The rifle was given to me by a good friend.Purple would you have a hinged floorplate?

Michaels or Oregon, AKA Uncle Mikes, used to make an alloy triggerguard with hinged floorplate for both the M1903 and the M98 Mauser. The last one I bought was maybe 22 yrs ago, at which time they had passed on the manufacturing rights to someone in California as I recall. You might query Uncle Mikes on this.
