Remington versa max sportsman

I picked one up last week, and so far it's pretty nice, it's based of the Benelli M2 almost bit for bit.... It's nice and smooth with very little recoil, for 500$ it's a steal.... Only down side, very few accessories, they're slowly trickling into the market though... I've got a line with the Mesa Tactical rep, to get my hands on their Urbino stock, which is due to release to dealers fairly soon. Also in the works is a side saddle, although the Benelli M2 mount will work as well. Nordic has some accessories available soon too.

I think the only thing I don't like on the Versa Max is the carrier tray, the thing is like a pitch fork, bit me twice already, I hear the Benelli one will fit in it, and the groove is less pronounced, so it's less likely to bite you. I'd also like to change to bolt release button for something bigger, hard to hit with gloves. The charging handle is ok, but again I'd like a larger one.

I do like the large trigger guard, works nice with gloves as well as the large safety. I also like how it's marked for 3.5" shells... Means if I get a mag extension, I can cram in more than 5 2.75" shells. Admittedly I didn't think the 28" barrel would bother me as much, but I'd like to swap it out for something shorter, it's a little on the long side for me. I would like ghost ring sights, but the vent rib barrel seems to through things off, as they're usually made for non-ribbed barrels.

In the end, it's a really good gun, and don't regret my purchase one bit.... It's a little frustrating trying to find accessories, but that's really only cuz it's still fairly new

Have you considered or looking into having the barrel cut down and re-tapped for chokes? Just wondering if at all possible as I was looking into it but don't have one yet.

At less than half price roll the dice. I'm more suspicious as to why it's selling so cheap. Comes with one choke and it only takes Pro Bore choke tubes at $110 ea..

12ga pro bores you can get quite easily from Briley direct at just under 43.00 US. You should try to find them for a 410 or 28ga.Took me I bet 4-5 years to locate some for my 1100 sportings. One place in Texas I think it was where I eventually found them.

George Trulock builds and sells them form less than $50 also.

I've read some places that you can't re-thread it after cutting it, because the barrel isn't thick enough, or the thread pattern is different so re-threading will have to be done at the factory. Different stories depending on where I go, I do know that mylocal smith doesn't have the tools to do so, and I've been too lazy to contact Casey at Tac-Ord

Also, the length is starting to grow on me... I don't mind the 28" barrel much now.

Been using my Versa Max for just over a year now. Geese Hunting and Sporting Clay (Until the O/U came into the picture). I have had absolutely no functional issues with it aside from the removal of the charging handle for extraction of the bolt. It's a lot stiffer than it ought to be on mine but some soft jaw pliers do the trick.

Handles any load I throw into it and I've never experienced any discomfort with 3.5" hunting rounds. There is something I feel like asking Remington about. I have probably 3,000 rounds through it, and there is some wear on a bolt component. It's probably just going to be a replacement part at some point as it won't be a safety issue.

One annoyance is with the gas system. It can be a chore to clean. As well, the location of the vents near the rear of the handguard can throw back powder residue if you happen to be using dirty burning powder (I no longer run Federal's target loads for this reason). Safety glasses, and a closed mouth solves that.

In the blind, and at the station, this gun has been every bit as successful as other Semi-Autos (SA) that I've seen out there. In fact, some folks I know have had huge issues with more expensive SAs while mine kept knocking down birds, and breaking clay.
