I want to get into long distance shooting (varmints & targets). I’ve already decided that my caliber of choice will be the .223 (because of the varmint thing). What I am not sure about yet is which rifle to get.

I do not have the ability or equipment to “build” a rifle, and I can’t afford one of the mega-costly custom jobs. So I have to look for something that I can essentially buy “off the shelf”.

I’m looking at the “Remington VSSF” or the “Savage 12 Series Long Range Precision Varminter”. I’m starting to lean towards the Savage.

I’d appreciate any comments or advice.

There is no right and no wrong answer. What will follow next is a string of subjective opinions that validate consumer choices.

Buy whichever one YOU like better, and know that the results will be exactly the same. Factory guns are factory guns. Some shoot extremely well, some shoot extremely poorly and the majority fall somewhere in between. Both are great guns with their own minor individual advantages and disadvantages. Be careful of the advice you get from internet forms and never forget what you paid for it.

I don't think you will find much difference between the accuracy of the rifles. Personally I don't find the palm swell on the vssf II stock comfortable. It just doesn't feel right to me, but someone must like it.

Since you mention long range, I would think about finding a rifle with a faster twist rate barrel, maybe 1:9 or 1:7, to shoot bullets like a 75gr amax. Its easier to deal with the wind with a higher BC bullet like the amax.

What about a used 700p or 700 xcr lrt ($1175) in 223 from the EE? There is a dual port in 204 for $1150 on the EE. Just a few thoughts.

I did own a VSSF,and it was quite accurate, but not as accurate as my new Sako Varmint Stainless Laminate in .223.Mine is the 1 in 8" twist model, and it shoots bullets as light as 50gr very accurately.

Sort of the same here. I traded in a very accurate Remington VSSF in .223 for a Sako 75 laminate in .223. The main advantage of the Sako is a 1:8 twist for heavier bullets but I have a .204 Ruger Pac-Nor screwed on it now :)

However the OP has only mentioned Remington and Savage. For the money the Remington is a very good rifle, but the 1:12" twist on both rifles is not the best for long range in my view. If I were parting with the cash I would take the Remington over the Savage just because I think the Rems are better finished, but to each his own. I would get yourself to a dealer and try and handle both rifles see which you prefer. They should both shoot well out of the box.

I must admit I'd not considered the Sako until now. I've done some research on it since the earlier posts and it is impressive. It's about $600 to $700 more than the Remington VSSF, but it's still within range.

I wish the barrel was a tad longer, but the stock is certainly better than the composite stocks. And the single stage trigger is a nice option. I'll have to look into this further.

Clay at Prophet River(a forum sponsor by the way) is selling Sakos at very good prices,it will likely cut into that difference by a couple of hundred dollars or so compared to most other dealers. He also has great prices on scopes. The set trigger is nice, but I find that even if you use it without setting it,the trigger pull is very good.

Since the disscusion has wandered off the original 2 makes and still on a 223 bent my choice for one of my other varminters is the CZ 527 Kevlar, 9" twist 24" tube with the HS stock, det straight feed mag and intergal dovetail mounts. Should be around 1k for the rifle. Heres mine;

I have the VSSF in 223 it shoots great. My load 50 gr Blitzkings with 25.5 gr Benchmark equals to .138"@ 100 yards. About a month ago I was looking at the same two guns I went with the Remmy cause I would shoot more varmints and the heaviest bullet I'd use is 50grs. If you want a long range target gun you probably would want the 1:9 twist that the savage has.

got Savage, never turned back... freefloat bbl, dual pillar bedding, accutrigger, free floating bolt head , twist rate, and now they have that accu stock.... for the money savage all the way... i shoot a modle 12 bvss , loves 55gr nosler and 69GR SMK.... over 25.5 gr of varget @ 100 yards 0.30'' @ 315 yards 1.15''
my 2 cents

The VSSF II is a very nice rifle... but it's not a long distance rig. The 1:12 twist isn't well suited for the heavier ammo. It's a varmint rig.
