Hey guys,
I've been tossing and turning trying to decide on my next rifle....I wanted something I could take to the range and have fun with but since I hunt I wanted a back up rifle as well. I was lookin at a .223 but would not work as a back up hunting rifle. So I decided on a .308 but not sure what rifle to get now...The VTR looked good and I love the action on my M700 300win. Is this a good option for what I'm looking for? I've been hearing mixed things about the barrel but I've seen some good reviews on it as well? Any input would be super helpful. I tried the Search option but not much came up.

well with the VTR weird cutaway triangular barrel, looks cool and suppose to cut down on the weight as well also with the built in port/compensator (however you want to call it) is a good call.

The downside is that with the ported front end, you will lose a few FPS (not that significant if this is just a backup)

Though if you are looking into Remington, I'd suggest the 700 Police (detachable mag is great) and the precision... well it's a Remington so it's pretty good out of box already.

The one I saw (read a review in a credible magazine---I think it was American Rifleman) was OK in the accuracy department, but I recall thinking it should have been better for the price. The "conventional" Rem 700's tested earlier seemed more accurate.

I think the triangle barrels are really hit and miss. Some guys love them and others have very bad experiences with them. My friend has one in 22-250 and he is changing the barrel on it because it shoots so bad. I'm not sure if it is the barrel design or the fact that Remington quality is a little suspect as of late, I have another friend who bought a new remington semi in 30-06 but it was chambered with a 270 reamer, that was quite scarry on the first outing to shoot.

-my 2 cents

Thanks guys, I was interested in the shorter barrel for lugging it in thick brush and I thought the muzzle brake would make a diff on a .308 but everyone has been telling me just to go with a SPS Varmit. Now I'm thinking of goin with a .243 instead of a .308......I'll probably flip flop on calibre until I read enuff on the Boards to convince me one way or another

If you want to carry the gun in the bush you will not like the SPS Varmint. The barrel is very long and clumsy and you can't even carry it easily with a sling as the stock is ultra light and the heavy barrel makes it very awkward.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the VTR as a "havin' fun at the range" rifle or as a back-up hunting rifle.

Accuracy is NO better or NO worse than any other rifle you buy off the shelf. Some are fantastic, some are mediocre and the majority fall somewhere in between. Expect accuracy in the neighbourhood of 1MOA and anything better than that is a bonus.

Nobody building a precision rifle would ever use a triangular barrel, but then these aren't "precision" rifes and were never intended to be. They are a perfect rifle for their intended purpose.

Careful. Common sense, logic and truth can get you into trouble. :D

I Imagine that triangular barrels are more gadgety BS to drum up sales and dilute a once proud brand.

I think I'm just gonna have to buy 2. Start building my quiver now. It's less trouble than trying to find one rifle to do everything. I've got the 300 win mag and a ruger 10/22, lots of shotguns (I'm a sporting clays guy) but now I want to get more into long range shooting and other shooting disciplines. Thanks to everyone for the input, sometimes I use CGN to get talked down off the ledge!

i have one in 308. I bought it for the same purposes as yourself and I'm very pleased with it. I hunt with mine, it swings quick and I find it well balanced and have no problem packing it around all day. Obtunded is right on with the accuracy, i get right around 1moa if i do my part.

I had one on lone (in 204 ruger) the gun was a great shooter...hell I might even buy one for winter hunting
