Looking to trim er' down a few ounces. Looking for suggestions. As it sits now with sling - 8.75lb measured on my handy rapala fishing scale:D. Rem700 in .308win with laminate stock, bushenll 2-7X32 and leopold rings/bases. I'm not totally in love with scope and would consider something different - would be nice to have a little more bolt-eyepiece clearance when cycling. Perhaps new synth stock?? Kinda like the feel of the hogue. Just pondering options to make all-day carries a little lighter :)

Hogue stocks are heavy. It's always better to buy light to start with. There are a number of ways to drop weight from a rifle but in my experience none of them are cheap.:D A good quality lightweight synthetic stock wil be in the $500+ range. The action could be slabbed, bolt and barrel fluted, and there are other minor weight reductions possible(aluminum pin and shroud, and bolt skeletonizing,etc.).All of it costs money,as I said if you want light better to buy light to start with. Mur

Simple! ! !! Put it up for sale on the EE and then take the $$$ and go buy a Tikka T3 LightStainless in whatever caliber turns your crank and be happy.

What he said.

Or flog the Laminate stock in the classifieds for 150$ and put that towards a McMillan synthetic stock. :)

A McMillan EDGE stock will lose you 1.5-2 pounds and cost you 575$ shipped to your door...its worth the $$$

Sell it and buy a Rem model 7 in same calibre, you will be more satisfied in the end! The stupidist gun trade I ever made was trading my Rem 7 308win, takdriver with any ammo! Dale Z!
PS. I have a Rem 700 300mag not gun you lug up sheep mountains, but no better gun for moose in my collection, my one goto gun in the safe when the chips are down!No way really to lighten these rigs without magor sugery!

Thats a fair bit of weight savings to be had in the mcmillan stock - but quite a price also!

can't do tikka - yikes

All that you want to know is here... http://mcmfamily.com/mcmillan-stocks-hunting-stock-list.php?subnav=branch2a

The price is worth it, trust me ;)

find a Bell & Carlson "Ti" takeoff stock for $150. Probably drop a pound right there. Loose the leather sling, get a Uncle Mike's Mountain sling for $35. Gretan bolt shroud/pin for $100, drops another couple ounces. Talley lightweight rings will drop another ounce or two. Leupold VxII 2-7x33 will drop another few ounces over the 3200. Cut the barrel back to 20"? Flute the bolt, yada yada. It won't be cheap you'd be better off to buy a lighter rifle as others have said

Those two suggestions alone would go a long way to trimming weight off that rifle. The 2x7 Leupold is a fine scope as well. I own three, maybe four.

Laminates are heavy. PERIOD! Restock it and buy a lightweight 1" nylon sling and keep it in your pocket.

Great info - a pound is about all I would want to shave. Stock and sling seem like pretty decent options. Thanks

Some people lighten their laminates by drilling holes in the butt and milling or routing out some wood along the bottom of the barrel channel. As mentioned above changing the sling, scope and bases would also help. If your handy you could get a wildcat composite stock and fit and finish it yourself for the same weight savings as an edge. Decisions decisions!!!!

Seems you need to spend more money than its worth to lighten the rifle, but if your handy you can take alot of wood off the stock and still have a ridgid rifle, but if you are going to spend more money to get a new syn. stock, why bother sell/trade the gun and get a rem 7 or a Ruger RSI, very light accurate rifles I have had both, regreted selling either of them!as hunter5425 says decisions decisions!
