Hello,

I recently (today) acquired a Remington Woodsmaster 742 in 30-06. Serial puts it's manufacture between 1977-1978. Looks pristine, no marks anywhere. Action looks almost new, if a little dry. Magazine has no damage, just missing paint on the wings.

Any thing to keep an eye on while cleaning it before taking it to the range to test it out?

Thanks.

Winchester? Sure it isn't a Remington?
It should have some lube in the action. You can get at most of the breech mechanism by pushing out the two pins that secure the trigger mechanism. Remove the screw at the front end of the forend and the forend can be pulled off. Then you can access the gas system. Apply a bit of lube on the spring and its guide.
Further disassembly gets complicated.

My bad. Remington. Fixed that ... thanks.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, I was looking at full disassembly. Not for the faint of heart.

After you’ve done it once, it’s really not that hard. There’s a good video on YouTube that shows you step by step.
Thanks. Yeah, I found a few good videos on taking it apart for regular maintenance. Hopefully I can get it down to the range in the next few weeks. It came with a three boxes of Imperial 180 gr. Still has the price tag on it - $10/box at Canadian Tire. Guessing late 70s.

Yes sir, wasn’t yesterday for sure lol. I’d like to have those prices now

Don't over lube it... a little spray of G96 Gun Treatment on the metal and the locking lugs and blow away the excess and wipe.

Thanks. I read that you should put grease on the lugs and the integral rails the carrier run on because they tend the wear the most. Just G96, clear excess, wipe it down and put it away. Cool.
