does any one know anything about the remington woodsmaster model 742? comments? i just recently aquired one in a trade and was just curious as to how reliable and accurate they are. i am not by any means new to the world of firearms, just new to this site. i have been shooting since i was 5. (grandpa's .22) any comments, tips/pointers, PICTURES!!!, would be much appreciated! thanks, jeremy.

That would be the predesesor (sp?) of the 740 and the 7400?
Good gun from what I hear, but the newer models would have the heavier locking lugs. I think, don't know for sure.

You've got yourself a nice deer rifle, what calibre? I'm more of a 760 fan but I've seen alot of the 740/742/7400 rifles in the hands of my hunting buddies. I beleive the 742 was basically an improved 740 which was what they sold until the 7400 came out in the 1980's and replaced it.

The 740 was first, then the 742. I had a hunting buddy who killed everything in NA with his 742 in 308, except Kodiak Bear.

Of course, he missed a 72 inch bull moose I had called out for him, at less than 100 yd. It failed to fire because the bolt was not all the way into battery.

He never forgave me for not shooting that bull. He and I had a long time disagreement about semis, and I just sat there and let him fidget with the thing as the bull walked away into the willows. :D

We handled that bull later on.

I've just recently got one myself (.308) and I did a bunch of poking around on the internet before I shot it. The 742 seems to be a "love it or hate it" gun, with some guys claiming they are innacurate jamm-o-matics and other guys claiming to have filled thier freezer with them for decades without any problems. One thing I did find out is that the guys who love them keep their guns clean and pay particular attention to cleaning the gas system very well. When I got mine I totally dissasembled it and cleaned it well and so far it works like clockwork.

Yup, I'm still around.

it is 30-06 cal. so far it is a really nice rifle. i took it apart about 30second after i had it in my house and cleaned the crap out of it, and i mean crap!! the guy who i had traded with, while experienced with firearms, used wd-40 to keep this particular rifle lubed. i don't know about you guys but in my opinion anyone who uses wd-40 on a weapon and doesn't clean it properly after is a waste of skin!! not trying to provoke anyone by saying that, just voicing my opinion. as i said, i have been shooting since i was five and am now in the military and i know how to clean a weapon properly!. thanks guy. again any pics of your would be great!

It's pretty simple, most 740-42s have a bad rep for a reason.
Shoot it, if it jams it's junk! If not you may have a good one.
Look for chatter marks on the inside top of the reciever.

I made a trade for a "good one" in .308 in 1986 ... used it for 3 years till I acquired a 7600 pump in 35 Whelen. Sold the .308 to a buddy at work ... he's still using it. Talked to him after last season ... NO, it's never malfunctioned, NOT ONCE. Loves Remington Core-Lokt 180 SP's.

Take care of the magazine(s), replacing them gently ... and keep the rifle's
action clean, with special attention given to the chamber. Inevitably, it's a magazine, magazine latch or chamber dirt/roughness/pitting issue that causes all the problems. And don't "over-lubricate" ... they work better virtually "dry". I cringe every time I see somebody empting half a can of WD-40 or equivalent spray into the action of one !

You have the rifle.
Take it out and shoot it.
You will find out soon enough if you are going to be pleased with it.
