Hi all,
I have an older remington 11-48 410ga semi-auto that I am going to sell and need help decoding the barrel date stamp it, it is odd as it has 4 digits and they are N K N L any help would be appreciated. Also has any one seen one at a gunshow recently it is the 3" shells with vented rib barrel model with modified choke, what are they going for?

Thank Keith

Can you post a picture of the NKNL markings? That code seems "off" - any chance you're mis-reading it? Most 11-48 would (I think?) have been coded with 2 digits, unless it was made in 1953 or earlier, then the last 2 digits would be the same and the code would be 3 letters long.

It should not be NK or NL either, since N is not a valid month code. "KN" would be a valid code for your gun as May, 1966.

11-48's were manufactured from approx. 1949 to 1968, according to some quick google-fu, so you're in that range.

The first letter should fit this month pattern:

B - Jan
L - Feb
A - Mar
C - Apr
K - May
P - Jun
O - Jul
W - Aug
D - Sep
E - Oct
R - Nov
X - Dec

the last 1 or 2 letters should be as follows:

UU - 1949
WW - 1950
XX - 1951
YY - 1952
ZZ - 1953
A - 1954
B - 1955
C - 1956
D - 1957
E - 1958
F - 1959
G - 1960
H - 1961
J - 1962
K - 1963
L - 1964
M - 1965
N - 1966
P - 1967
R - 1968

I'm no 11-48 connoisseur, but these codes are pretty standard for remington products in that timeframe.

I have to agree with May 1966 . I have an 1100 standard wt 20ga that also has the 4 letter code on the barrel mine being N A N R Mar 1966 .

Yours looks to be in real nice original condition and we never seen a lot of 11-48 in 410 back in the day plus with a mod choke most were skeet
These are in US dollars
Here are the current Blue Book values for the Plain barrel (.410 bore) -
mint/new; 100%: $725
Exc.; 98%: $650
Vgood-Exc.; 95%: $550
Good-Vgood; 90%: $450
Good; 80%: $375
Fair-Good; 70%: $300
Add 10%-20% for VR barrel, depending on original condition.

The gun is worth close to a grand canadian however getting that for it in canada will be a tough sell IMO but one never knows
If it was mine and I wanted to sell it $750/800 min plus shipping CD or it would go back into storage
All the best with your sale

The blue book values are erelevant in Canada and the U.S. That being said nice gun uncommon configuration .if u need to sell quickly $700-750 if not I think it is $900-$1000.00. Gun . The mod choke adds at least 25-30% to the value

Just wondering if you have ever run into one with the VR mod choke like this one. I honestly don't think I have. A couple of full choke VR over the years but no mod
Cool gun for sure
Cheers

"KL" is your date code. I have a mint condition "DYY" 28ga. Plain barrel with full choke but they are sweet little shotguns in the field!
So you are saying that the date code is actually the 2nd and fourth digit of that 4 digit code . So that would make my 1100 march of 1968 .

No. I said the date code on this particular 11-48 is "KL". The fact that it happens to be the 2nd & 4th letters is irrelevant. On this 11-48 I suspect the "N" is just an assembler's mark that was stamped before the barrel was polished and rib installed.

Ok so my 1100 has N A N R stamped on the barrel so is it Mar of 66 or 68 .serial number ends with an x .

You would have to post a pic. The OP's gun is not really NKNL. They are not even aligned. That's actually 2 different lines of text. Back when these were made, Remington had a high level of quality control and would not have stamped a continuous 4 digit code that sloppily.

If yours is in a perfectly straight line, that may be a challenge, but it it's offset like the OP's stamping, then it's not really "NANR". The first date code digit in your stamping is DEFINITELY an "A" for March, since N is not a valid month code. Your second digit could be an N or an R - both are valid possibilities. Without a picture, I can't be sure.

Regarding suffixes...

For the 870 and 1100, here is the Serial Number Suffix Code list:

V 12 GA. (2 3/4”)
M 12 GA. MAGNUM (3”)
A 12 GA. “SUPER” MAGNUM (3 ½”)
W 16 GA. ( 2 ¾” )
X 20 GA. “HEAVY FRAME”
N 20 GA. “HEAVY FRAME MAGNUM”
K 20 GA. “LIGHT WEIGHT” (“LW”) (ALSO INCLUDES M/1100 “LT”)
U 20 GA. LW MAGNUM (ALSO INCLUDES M/1100 “LT”)
J 28 GA.
H .410 BORE (2 ½” OR 3”)

So if yours is an "X", your 1100 should be a 20 gauge heavy frame model for 2,3/4" shells.

I did notice in the OP pic that stampings were off set .after a closer look at mine the A is just slightly off set from the N with the R noticeably off set . making the gun a 68 . it was an unexpected find on the EE :d . no mention of the gun being a std weight in the ad . it was fired very little as the stock was shortened youth or wife's gun . the gun is as you say heavy frame 20ga 2 3/4" full choke . I have since had the choke opened to Light Mod .gun is used for sporting clays and grouse . it is heavy but there is no recoil what so ever with light target loads . thanks for the info .

She sounds like a real nice gun. Congrats Those full frame 20ga swing some sweet and are bullet proof:) A bit hard to find original replacement barrels for but not impossible but opening the choke took care of that just fine
If you need another unshortened stock a 12ga will fit and easy to find
I still have a pair in 1100 20ga from my old skeet 4 gauge sets and still always grab them first when doing any 20ga skeet shooting
Cheers
