I've finally convinced my good friend to purchase his first rifle and his wife won't allow him to spend much unfortunately.
Wholesale sports has both of these on sale right now so i'm wondering as a cheap starter deer gun which one is better? I've tried to tell him to spend a little more and get something like a vanguard but that's a no go..

783's shoot very well, I have 2....30'06 and 7rm.
They are an upgrade from the Axis, better stocks, better trigger, better mags,.
And I do have an Axis in 7-08 which shoots OK, it's just made so cheaply it's gross. I got it for $225 new to my door after MIR a couple years ago and that's about all they are worth.

Owned both in small caliber. I'd say, in my opinion, they're pretty equal. I'd maybe give a slight edge to the axis as far as smoothness of the action. The design and looks of the 783 are a little nicer. For a cheap rifle, you can't go wrong with either. I think the aftermarket is there for the savage. Not caught up with the 783 yet.

The both shoot uber accurate.

The metal finish on the 783 looks like it was by a beaver with diamond tipped teeth - but it really is "just cosmetic".

The both sell for about the same price.

The trigger on the 783 is 100 times better than the "Axis" and on par with the "Axis II".

Both stocks were made from plastic coke bottles that were in your recycle box a couple weeks ago but a can of spray foam (the low expansion is best) used to "fill" all the buttstock does stiffen them up and takes care of that hollow sound that you get when you bump anything.

New for 2016, any Remington rifle bought in 2016 will have a limited lifetime warranty (original owner only) - with Savage you get a 1 year warranty (again, original owner only).

Neither! If looking at the budget/economy line, go with a Savage 11/111. The Axis does not have a "real" recoil lug. What it has instead is a notch in the plastic stock, and a notch in the action, and a piece of metal that fits into this slot. In any, but the smallest calibers, I don't see to many rounds going down range before the plastic slot is pounded out, and the "recoil" lug is loose and sloppy, affecting accuracy. Don't know a lot about the 783, but I doubt it is built as well as the Savage 11/111

The axis uses the same floating recoil lug system as the Tikka t3.

Lol you sounds like a window and door installer "low expansion foam" but I must agree, very smart, and I will have to try this for myself

Hard to argue them Phlame Camo's or Bonz deals.
For the five hundred, I'd suggest strongly to go this route.
Better resale value as well.

Friends don't let amis buy Axle's oar dizzposable Remi's.

Does Ted not still have that 783 in 7mm that shoots a little over an inch at 200m?

I have a 783 in 223 shoots very good nice trigger ,, 5 shot groups in at less than a inch ,, nice clip for 400 bucks yes sir 783 the way to go ,, may buy another great value... better than a used rifle that might not shoot half as good

Your friend just needs to convince his wife the cost savings involved with purchasing a better rifle. He can buy an entry level rifle for $400, however he can tell his wife that they don't last long and that he would have to purchase another rifle anyways with in a few years. So if he buy say a $700 rifle with a $300 scope instead, you're actually saving money by starting off with a set up that will last him his life time. Not saying the Savage Axis or 783 is a short life span rifle or that they're a really ####ty rifle, just she wouldn't @#$%ing know any better and in the end he gets a better gun and scope. (Those scopes they include with the 783 and Axis are $hit. The worse of the two is the 783's scope.) That's how auto shops sell woman an oil change they didn't need.
