I'm in the thought process of building a target rifle but also would like to hunt with it I've been looking at alot of the higher end 700s and would prefer to have the 5r but which one would be bed to go with budget really isn't a problem

If you don't want to stay factory, it isn't alot of money to stick a new tube on as another option. Custom bbl will generally always out shoot factory. Sps action about 400$, new tube about 400-560$ installed, takeoff hs precision stock 300$. Make a nice semi custom shooter.

That's what Edge fill is for. The problem with the 5R is the HSP stock. That aluminum bedding block makes for a lot of unnecessary weight.

20" Rem heavy contour
HTG Edge
50mm Nightforce
Makes for a rifle just under 10lbs loaded.

You can easily shave off another pound or more depending on your scope choice. However, for a rifle that performs range and field duty, I’m satisfied to be under 10lbs with a reliable 50mm scope and heavy barrel.

That's what makes the stock nice and stiff though. Without the bedding blocks it's just another plastic stock, and it won't help with accuracy. To be fair the stock it's pretty light considering the specs , also the friggin' bull barrel at 24" is what makes up most of the weight.

My point is there are ways to make a 700 lighter. Of course it will cost more.

Or skip the 5R completely and buy an LTR. It isn't stainless steel and has a slower twist, but whether that matters or not is personnel opinion.

My 5R weighs 15lbs.

I figure if I can hump a 20lb machine gun and 800rnds of link on multiple 20km patrols I can carry a rifle I trust and a couple dozen rounds of .308 on a walk in the woods.

also kind of looking to make it look nice as well is there a gun smith anywhere close by or in canada at least that spiral flutes bolts? ive tried searching but only stuff in the states comes up

Very true. I just don't want to spend any more money on my rifle this year........so I'm convincing myself it's perfect as it is now.
