Hello,

I am looking to see what type of loads guy's are using with this gun and what they have for accuracy? I had my dads first gun restored a few years back and would like to take it on a hunt this year. I tried some Federal Premium 150gr Sierra Game King BTSP with groups at 2.5". Maybe I am being fussy but surely This gun can do better than that for groups. It does not help the trigger is like pulling a 10lb weight. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

First of all, you are right, to make these shoot, you need a trigger job. They are not an easy trigger to work on. I use 180Gr. Hornaday PSPBT (pointed soft point, boat tail) with 53Gr. of Winchester 760 powder. There may be a better powder, but this works well for my 30-06,.303 and .257Roberts. I get about 1 1/4" or so groups @ 100Yds.

I have found that 760/7600s will accept surprisingly heavy loads and often shoot better at higher pressures. I have never used small base dies for them, but do FL resize all brass.

My one 760 is a 1952 model in 30-06 with an 18 1/2 inch barrel.

For deer I load 47 grains of IMR 4320 and get 2471 fps. For moose, I load 48.5 grains of IMR 4320 and get 2636 fps. In both loads I use 180 grain Nosler Ballistic tips and have had excellent results on both species. The deer are bang/flop, and the moose have been dead on their feet, none travelling more than 50 yds.
