i've been looking for a 700 in 308 for a while now. i've found an older 700. but for a couple hundred more i can get a new 700P. for a couple more a new 700P LTR.

what would you do in my shoes?

take a look at Rem 700SPS-Varmint....
for 620 you will have same rifle as 700P, except of the stock.....
you can find a stock and just switch them later :)

I'm assuming the first 700 you're talking about is a varmint/heavy barrel BDL in .308 Win? Or is it a 700VS? There isn't too much difference between the 700VS or 700P other than stock geometry & finish. The LTR is basically the 700P with a 20" fluted barrel. In terms of accuracy, there isn't too much difference between the three. The LTR will give you reduced velocity out of the 20" tube compared to the 26" bbls on the VS & P models. In real world conditions, that velocity loss isn't that big a deal, unless you're shooting 1000M +. The LTR, however, has that Look Cool Factor...you just have to decide how much you're willing to spend to look cool!

Less expensive choices now available are the new 700 SPS Varmint & SPS Tactical. Stocks aren't the greatest, but there are more than a few used/new take off H.S. Precision VS & P stocks available for a later "upgrade."

The PS stock has a Palm swell that unfortunately appears to have been material addes to the VS grip, giving the PS a really short reach to the trigger. If you have long fingers you'll find that too much of your finger will be into the trigger guard.

The PS has two swivel studs in the front and the forend is slightly wider and flatter.

No "J" locks in the police rifles.

Powerwagon's all about the LCF.

well if you have a really cool rifle, then all you do is put one hole in the target, then miss the next two. then tell everyone that that is your 3 shot group:evil:

the fact you have an Uber cool rifle makes it all the more credible.;)

One vote for the LTR. I have mine bone stock with TPS rings and base and a Merlin 10x42T scope on it. I can shoot sub-moa all day long at 100yds right out of the box with handloads.

LTR!!! I am getting 2600FPS with the 175SML and 2830FPS with the 154gr Scenar!!!
