I've got this Model 700 308 with a serial number that is either KC 777** or RC 777**

Looking at Remington serial number guides though, as far as I can tell it is 1956 which is impossible or 1982 which is unlikely as well because this was old and well used when the previous owner got it in the 1980s.

It is also unusual with a 20-inch barrel.

Any hints please?

Chances are it is an early sixties model as they came with 20" barrels, should be a steel butt plate also and if you check with a magnet a blued stainless steel barrel.

The following serial number information is for Remingtion firearms manufactured after 1921

Remingtons manufactured after 1921 have a code located on the left side of the barrel near the frame that identifies the year and month of manufacture. The following letters correspond to the months of the year, for example B=January, L= February and so on:

B – L – A – C – K – P – O – W – D – E – R – X

Using barrel codes (such as those listed above) to date the manufacture are reliable on Remington rifles, as the company rarely changed barrels on a customer’s rifle.

Using these barrel codes to date a shotgun is somewhat unreliable, as shotgun barrels are often interchanged at random. One needs to be sure that the barrel is original to the gun before trusting the Barrel Code listing, above.

(*) On 8/9/99, stopped stamping the barrels with the date code. They continued to mark the date code on the end flap of the shipping box. They resumed stamping the date code on the barrel on 10/1/01.

Like I said, looking at my SN it just doesn't make sense.

I don;t care what month it was made, but I'm certain that this rifle was not made in 1956 or 1982.

It is an unusual carbine model with a steel butt plate.

I had a similar question and sent them an email with serial number from the action through the Remington website support page and they responded within 24 hours with exact model and manufacture date.

Hope this helps.

Serial number says it was built in 1963. It will have a blued gunmetal barrel. The barrel length is correct for the first two years of standard calibre 700 production with only the magnums having a 23.5" stainless barrel. A pic of just the barrel markings would help clear things up altho i know it's sometimes hard to get a good one of the area .
