Ok. Im having a little hard time deciding between these two rifles: Remington SPS or Weatherby Vanguard in 300wm.

The only thing I have noticed is that Remmy has a 2" long barrel. Is this going to do anything to preformance whise? Other than that Im paying about $40 more for 2" on barrel length.

Oh fun, descison......:sniper:

Weatherby is getting a reputation for being a very good shooter. Remintion's advertised "legiondary out of the box accuracy" may have had some substance at one time but at present is more of a myth.

The same question was asked and there are 4 pages of responses, scroll down the page... under Hunting and sporting arms

Who do you think makes the Vanguard barreled action for Weatherby? When you buy a Howa you essentially buy a Vanguard, but you don't pay extra for the Weatherby name.

To tell you the truth, i didnt know anything about the Howa rifles. But know I have been doing some research into them and I will add them to the above list.

So, how many of you guys own a Howa rifle ??? So the Howa should drop into a Vangruard stock and a Vangruard should drop into a Howa stock??

Don't own one, but yes, the action/barrel are one in the same. The only difference is the monte carlo stock...

I'm disgusted with new 'out of the box' Remington 700's. Only good part about them is the action. Why do you see so many unfired remington barrels and take-off stocks for sale here in the Parts Exchange? Yes I know that there are tons of aftermarket assessories available for them but if they were such a "Great" platform there would be no need for so many aftermarket assessories.

Frankly since winchester went under remington has been cutting corners. For out of the box accuracy it is probably time to look at Tikka, SAKO or maybe revisit the new Winchester model 70's by FN. I like the SAKO's but have a hard time trying to raise $1600 for a new rifle. Its probably well worth it though.

Ok Ive made made up my mind. Ive got to sell this Mauser 98k first, then it is either going to be a weatherby or the Howa.

Anyone looking for a Mauser 98k in 308????? :D

If you want to modify it the get the 700 (stock, trigger, firing pin etc), if you want to keep it as is then get the Weatherby.

Fit / feel / fondness

Which one do you like better when you handle / shoulder it? What we say is really immaterial compared to how the gun fits / feels in your hands. I just bought a Weatherbay Vanguard to replace a Ruger M77 MKII. The one thing about the Vanguard is that enough stores carry them, that you can go shoppoing, looking at the paper targets that come with all Weatherbys, until you find one that's exceptionally accurate. I found one that shot a 5/8" group; I asked a Weatherby technician why this one wasn' pulled to qualify as a sub MOA and he replied that they only need so many sub MOAs each year (supply & demand), and in reality, many of the Vanguards that you buy over the counter will achieve the same level of exceptional accuracy with the right guy pulling the trigger.

The thing I always hear in favor of the remington, and I did consider this gun seriously, is the # of atermarket parts. Point is that if I wanted to spend a bunch of money on aftermarket parts, then why wouldn't I have just bought a more expensive rifle in the first place???

If ther is any other gun you should be considering it is the Tikka T3. I couldn't find any in my city, so it was a moot point, but maybe you can. You alos may want to consider the caliber you are buying if you went with the Tikka because I have heard a number of Tikka owners who say their .300 Win mags also vibrate their molars out of their jaws.

In the end, it is a matter of preference and whichever you choose will provide you with years of satisfaction.

Good luck!
