Has anyone used this kind of "removable" SKS mag? Do they work decently? Are they really that easily "removable?"

Worthwhile purchase?

They work but honestly the stripper clips are better. Also the sks d is better I wouldn’t waste my money I’d buy lots of stripper clips and just learn to be happy with it

I like'em. I've got 6 for my Tapco, had for 3-years. I fire 50-200 rounds each trip (bought a couple cases of MS) with NO probs. There is a small bit of filing needed to make them easier to insert, but they worked fine b4 that too. Just 'better' now. All of mine have the pop-rivet pin @5. And to make them 'accessible' to stripper clips they need another bit of filing. Pics below.

I would not recommend. The couple I had both cracked and became unusable. What's the point in having a big ugly sticky out easily broken plastic thingy when you can only have 5 rounds anyway?

sigopig is right, I forgot to add that mod is needed. You need to grind about 3" off the bottom of the bolt - there are YTs for that. I didn't bother, I just lock the bolt back with my finger 'up the mag spout' th load the First Mag. After you fire and empty a mag, the bolt locks back - LSHO.

I've got half a dozen of the ProMag 5/20 SKS magazines with the additional lever on them. I like them much more than the Tapco ones, but there seems to be only ONE way to install the magazine springs correctly. If I don't reassemble the magazine just right, it pops out 1-2 rounds whenever I go to insert the magazine. I suspect that it would be more reliable if I filed off 2-3mm of the trigger bars that stick out into the mag well, but I really don't want to modify a mint Russian SKS for that.

I didn't bother with grinding down the bolt carrier to insert on a closed bolt. Works just fine inserting with an open bolt.

The ProMags sell for $55-ish at most places, but sometimes they go on sale for $42-d44, I can't remember if it was G4C, FOC, or TNA that had them.

There's also the Hical magazine adapter that converts an SKS to be able to take 7.62x39mm AR magazines, but the kit costs about 50% that of an entire SKS and requires a lot of filing and modification to the SKS.

Have the Hical system in my Tula ,yes some filing is required however filing, is worth it to use my XCR xcr mags .

+1 to this. Just IMHO it’s never going to be or feel as good as a real magazine. They don’t stack well in pouches or rigs, they’re definitely not as reliable and as mentioned above it’s a lot of effort to go to, for only holding 5 rounds anyways.

That said, if it’s what you want, which is the only justification you need.

My experience with it though, if you want the feel buy a Type81 or SKS-D
If you want reliability and or speed, get good with stripper clips.
