OK... What is the trick.

There are tabs on the front and rear of the box that insert into slots in the action. There doesn't seem to be enough clearance between the box and the action, at either end, to slip either tab out of its slot, to allow for the box to come out... without deforming the box.

What am I missing?

You aren't missing anything. The box slid in from the side and then the slots were staked. Chances of getting the box out without it being deformed are not good.

Use a rubber mallet and hit it much harder than you think you need too.
Hold the barrel with your weak hand, swing down at the mag box at a very slight angle away from the action so as to pull it out. What you are trying to do is expand the sides outward which shortens the length of the box. It will pop right out when hit properly. This proceedure does not permanently distort the box nor does it mar the finish.

Cheers
