Remove wood from SKS gas tube

I'm trying to remove the wood from an SKS gas tube as part of installing this Matador Arms Sabretooth Mk2.

The little pin (ferrule pin?) is being a real bugger to drive out. It's my understanding that Ivan did not intend for the soldier to remove this part.

Anybody have some tips for the least destructive way to drive out this pin (yes I know it's a tapered pin)?

Raw power, coupled with anger.
I haven't found a bench block that holds it well, I use a big vice with rubber holders to keep it from moving.
Some of them are extremely difficult to remove.
 
I drilled the surface on both ends, and punched it out and usually works.

Once I had to drill most of it in order to finally remove the bugger. I had a spare so I gave it hell.
 
Thanks for the tips! Ended up having to drillnoutnthe damn pin. It was in there but good. Now off tonthe range tomorrow night tomtry outnthe Matador Sabertooth. ��
