first .22

The Remington 597 or the Ruger 10-22 are good .22 semi-automatic rifles. The powder in the .22 long rifle cartridge is generally consumed in 16 inches of barrel, and accuracy is a relative subject. Many Silhouette target shooters use shorter barrels, but in bolt action, tuned, and worked over rifles. You generally can not expect target accuracy with an out of the box semi-automatic rifle.

If the intended purpose is a fun rifle, for informal range use, kicking tin cans around, or small game hunting, then the 597 or 10-22 should be as good as any of the mass produced rifles. The 10-22 has been around for a long time, and there are bags of accessories for them.

The .22 Magnum rifles have to be built stronger to handle the higher pressures of the ammunition. If you want a rifle for the Wife, I would stay away from the Magnums, and buy the standard .22 Long Rifle version. Ammunition is a lot cheaper, and noise is reduced. (Buy her a set of ear muffs while you are at it for range use.)

Whatever your purchase, you will need a scope of sorts to put of the rifle. I would recommend a bolt gun, such as the savage mk II because of the out-of-box accuracy and ease of scope mounting. Easy to clean, repair, and replace too. You might not be able to shoot 75yds accurately with a semi without upgrading. If you really want a semi, get a 10/22 with a Lilja or green mountain barrel, if you can spend that much on one gun. Generally a bolt gun with a thicker barrel can shoot nicely at 75yds. ht tp://tinyurl.com/5rh6jla
