Now I'm onto threading the end of my barrel to take a SEI Vortex flash hider. I removed the screw in the side of the reciever, made witness marks then got ready to unscrew the barrel from the reciever when I had a really good look at the two parts. It looks like the barrel is pressed into the reciever. The slots cut into the barrel for the handguard clip appear to mate with tangs from the reciever. I understood that all of the barrels were threaded into the reciever. Maybe this one is too, and those tangs are just keys.

Has anyone run into this before? Did you screw off the barrel, or press off the barrel?

Thanks

It has been my experience and others that there is not enough meat to thread the norinco barrels for a SEI direct connect vortex. I know three very experienced gunsmiths who have told me the same. You either have to get a USGI barrel or another flash hider...

Your barrel is threaded in.They all are.;)

You will need the proper barrel vise/clamp and the reciever wrench.

Make sure you completely drill out that barrel set screw, or it can tear up the barrel threads.

See my post in the M14 FAQ about rebarrelling and how to properly index/time the barrel.

If you have an old USGI Castle nut, you can "chase" the metric threads with it and then screw on the DC Vortex.I have done this to one of my M14s before I shortened it.This also save you from removing the barrel.

I'm rethreading both the barrel and the Vortex to 5/8-18 UNF.

Skullboy - I drilled-out the screw. It was a pain, but I took my time and the reciever threads are still intact. Thanks again for the info.

Because mine didn't come out so simply. :p

Also, to clarify I'm using the 5.56mm model of the SEI Vortex. That's why I'm tapping it.

I also hope you are drilling it out for 7.62mm :)

Had to ask....

Jeff

the OLD norc/polly receiver set screws came out EZ enough, but the NEW ones are really in there. Last couple I did, I drilled them out too.
