Just curious about something. I have a remington 7400 that I am taking apart for a good cleaning... When you remove the barrel and put it back on, how much will your scope be off usually ?

I don't think there's any way to tell except to shoot it , but I would venture there will be some change since fitting and torquing the number of pieces involved in removing the barrel and barrel extension would introduce variations from the factory install.

ask guntech or 45acp king about the Remington 7400/740/742 /750- it's a special tools and DO NOT remove the barrel "for a good cleaning- "if u do get it apart, you'll need a GOOD smith to put it back together- something NOT for the average joe even with extensive gun savvy=all u need to clean it is to remove the trigger mechanism via the 2 pins like the 870, and brush and swab with a slanted jag ( the one that came with the rifle works fine) brush on one end and loop on the other-sometimes you can take things too far for "a good cleaning"- this is ONE time the factory manual is CORRECT

Well contrary to the above posts, you can do it, it isn't that hard, and is far from complicated.
Firstly I am assuming you are just popping off the barrel retaining nut, so based on that assumption, the problem is getting the barrel nut off, and then back on without the nut wrench that you can buy from Brownells etc. I just used to make my own from socket sets ground down, and a thin head ratchet. Piece of piss once you are set up, but slow and fiddly. Even if you don't go to that extreme its still do-able, I used to use quality vise grips to get it off (they need a tight, and I mean damn tight grip on some of the barrel nuts), then modify the nut with a slot on its face so I could use a drag link bit (like a screw driver blade) to just unscrew the modified nut, then screw it back on.
Made cleaning the old 74 family really easy.
As far as shift in aim, not much if you did it right, usually not more than a few inches at 100yds, which is basically what the guns accuracy usually was anyway. In truth it just seemed to move the center of the group around a bit, but not much.

If you really want to strip the thing, once the barrel is off, you will want to remove the bolt and carrier assembly. That little pin that holds the cocking handle in place is a royal pain. Have fun.

I have had one apart before. I find it easy enough. But the one I had apart before was after I had taken the scope off to put it on another gun. The old 7400 was just going into storage, so I never had a chance to take it to the range to see if it threw things off much.... Was just wondering if anyone knew.

I can think of safer ways to give it a good cleaning. Like an sonic bath, or brake cleaner and a tooth brush.

I used to do speaking engagements at remote Rod & Gun clubs on gun cleaning. After the meeting I would clean guns for guys. Sometimes they were guns that literately had never been cleaned in 30 years. I tooth brush and brake cleaner would clean out triggers and actions. WipeOut or Sweets 7.62 would clean barrels.
