I have a Ruger 10/22 with a Green Mountain bull barrel that needs to be refinished. I would like to remove the blueing.

Is there a way of removing the blueing using some sort of chemical? I have some Permatex Naval Jelly which I tried on an old barrel and it seems to work.

Will the barrel rust? I believe it is stainless steel.
Thanks.

If the barrel is stainless then the finish isn't bluing.

If the finish is bluing, Navel Jelly will work nicely to take it off. Muriatic(Hydrochloric) acid will also work well.

Blueing is a surface oxidation of the metal. CLR works really fast at removing this - almost too fast. Vinegar works well too but takes a little longer. Hydrochloric acid works as well. Watch that you don't leave acid on too long or you will eat the metal as well as the blueing. When you remove the blueing, the metal will start to rust almost immediately. Lightly oil it down until you are ready to refinish then use a solvent like brake cleaner to wash the oil away. BTW stainless steel will not rust immediately but if you leave it for a long time, you may start to see traces of rust.
