I am new here and not certain I have the correct forum, but here it goes.

I am putting a Williams peep sight on a Winchester 94 and want to remove the existing rear sight without making a mess of it. Looks like it is pushed into a dovetail groove and not screwed down.

Should I tap it out towards the bore or the receiver. Or tap it out from underneath. What tool to use.
Thank-you.

Use a brass punch or wooden dowel and hammer and drive the dovetail out of the barrel, from the left side to the right.
You can buy or make a filler piece to go into the dovetail cutout to look better.
Making them is easy - take a piece of cold rolled 1/8 from Cdn tire or Home Depot, cut a chunk the correct size and dovetail it with a file. Then polish and cold blue. In about 1/2 hour you've got a filler.
