Removing Buttstock on Enfield

ok here goes i am trying to refinish the metal and replace the sported stock on my with a synthetic one but i cant seem to figure out how to get the recoil pad off to get to the screw in the butt stock
any ideas?
 
The screws holding the recoil pad in place may be hidden because only a slit was cut in the pad for the screw. By stretching the rear surface of the pad, you should be able to find the slits. Good idea to lubricate the screwdriver. Or, perhaps the pad was glued on.

If the pad was epoxied on you may have to cut and grind to get it off. But, most guys used screws and if the installer was careful and put a bit of lube on the screws and screwdriver shank he probably didn't damage the pad or the small slits he made to put the screws through. Check by pulling the pad in opposite directions with your thumbs and see if there are short slits through the surface of the pad. If there are, put a bit of grease on your screwdriver and push the driver through the slits. You may find Phillips head, slotted head or Roberts head screws in there so if you can't grab the screws readily try a different bit.

A socket wrench with exension will give you better torque getting the butt stock off. They can be very tight and I broke a socket screw driver taking one off. Thankfully Crappy Tire does replace broken tools on the spot.

A tire iron works realy good:D
 
That's the pad on an EAL rifle. You don't want to restock an EAL with a synthetic replacement set, unless your name is Bubba.
 
like tiraq says, look about half an inch in, at the top and bottom of the recoil pad, where it rests against your shoulder. Take your thumbs and use them to tug the pad from the center. It should show you the holes (there is a very easy analogy for this, but I am trying to keep it clean).
If its synthetics, then IIRC they are all Phillips screw drivers, #2 I think. Once you find that little hole, push a screwdriver coated in oil into them. You should feel the tip hitting the end of the metal on the screw. Them the butt pad, and a plastic plate it is attached to come off. After that its the big azz screw driver (I used to use a modified drag Link Socket and 1/2inch wrench), and pop the butt off the gun.
