Removing choke

I have a stevens savage 58 shotgun 12 gauge full choke($70 gun).
I would like to remove the choke so I can send slugs down it.
The gunsmith store said that the barrel isn't strong enough to be reamed.(could someone confirm/dis-confirm this)

They then said it would have to be chopped off at the end and would cost at least $50, and thats not putting the beed back.

For $50 I can cut the end off and put the beed back and be much happier. so does anyone know how far I cut it back? what warnings and what not should I know about?

You can safely fire factory slugs through your full choke barrel and it will probably be more accurate than if you cut the barrel down and have no choke.

Where did you get the idea you can not shoot factory slugs through a choked barrel?

Ive heard that you can't fire slugs through a choked barrel or it will have a 'blow out' or a 'split', especially on older guns. (because their barrels were made of softer material)

First link from using Google with 'full choke slugs' and there are many more just like it. I Also told the gun shop why I wanted to cut off the end, and they agreed.

Factory slug ammunition is made with a slug that is undersize intentionally so it will not harm shotgun chokes. The gases are sealed using wads, either fibre or plastic which deform to fit whatever they go through. Ammunition manufacturers would not market slugs that could not be fired through choked barrels.... that would be asking to be sued as barrel after barrel would be damaged. I have never seen a barrel damaged from a slug in 40 years of gunsmithing. I have found accuracy to be slightly better if there is some choke rather than no choke.

Shoot factory slugs all you want it will not harm your full choke barrel.

An entirely different scenario if you try and use steel shot. That will damage your barrel unless the choke is opened up considerably.

To be honest, I haven't bought slugs before. Will the box say factory slug and full choke safe or something on it?

In other words, when I goto Canadian tire or a gun shop for slugs, how can I be sure it is what I want?

They may say "for fully rifled barrels or rifled choke tubes only". Theses would be sabot slugs and they are NOT safe for your barrel. If they are rifled slugs intended for smoothbore shotguns, they can be safely fired through any fixed choke, including full. If you are unsure about what you need, don't get it from Canadian Tire (or Walmart). For the most part I find they try hard but haven't got clue what they are dealing with.

If i knew of any other place that sold the 15 pack slugs I wouldn't deal with them, but alas.
