Removing firing pin on SKS

don't use a vise friend. Get a block of wood with a hole that the cross pin can be drifted into. with the block on a sturdy table lay the bolt on it's side with the larger end of the cross pin centered on the hole in the block and drift the pin straight down. It'll be a stiff hit to get it moving. {the block should be thick enough that most or all the pin will fit into before bottoming out on the table}
Hope this helps, and I hope my explaination is clear enough.

BTW....you don't have to bother w a brass drift, steel is fine you won't hurt it....say 1/8"

Even after numerous S&A to clean the firing pin I still need a steel drift and big hammer, just use a good block to drive the pin into.

I will tear into it again today. I am used to the retaining pin in AR's which rotate and basically fall out. I was really surprised how stiff it was in the bolt. I tried the hammer but I will try a steel drift in place of the brass I was using.

I have drifted out pins from four different SKS bolts using the steel punch & socket backup method, and they varied from sliding out easily to "holy smoke, she's in there for good". The stubborn ones did eventually yield, but not without considerable force....

yup I had to use a 2.5 pound ball peen hammer and pound it like I was trying to break it to get it out.

I cleaned up 4 sks's on the weekend, the 3 Chinese ones needed a hammer, but came out. The Russian one would not come out, no matter what I hit it with. Will have to try again.

hi guys. what sks years are you all talking about in regards to firing/retaining pins removal? are yours chinese or russian sks? all three russian i own., {50,51,51} these pins removed almost too easily! whats up with that? steve.

:agree:

I used the tool from the cleaning kit and a couple of gentle hammer taps. Laid the bolt across a roll of packing tape. Guess I got lucky!

My 51 was really tight. Used a 16oz hammer and a good sized steel punch with alot of hard hits. It did eventually come out after much foul language. Its easier the next time thats for sure. Keep pounding at it it will come out
