Is there a "recommended" method to remove the FSB?

ie. Which side do I need to drive the pins out from?

Also - how often and with what does one recommend cleaning out the gas port/tube? Does the FSB need to be removed for this process or is it just as good to clean from the chamber end of things?

I was going to replace my FSB with a "low profile" gas block but I'd like to stay with something that's pinned so I'm thinking of cutting it down... would there be any harm in having it stripped and anodized after I do that?

Thanks.

Check AR15.com in the 'build your own' forum. It's all there.

I have never cleaned a gas tube on a C7/AR-15. If you really want to, wet a pipe cleaner with solvent.

Cut it down. If it's under a rail, some hi-temp BBQ paint will suffice.

+1 on that. I just cold blued mine as a temp fixe, but I think I will paint it. If the fsb is already fixed to the barrel, I'd suggest just cutting it down while attached. You wouldn't have to worry about lining up the gas port or any other gas issues that could arise from removing it. Tape off what you don't want to cut and just be slow and careful with the tools. I would remove the gas tube as well, just as a precaution. AR15.com has a huge thread on building your own ar with lots of pics and links. Cutting down a fsb is one of the posts and it is the one I based my mods on.
YMMV,
Hoddie.

I recall something about pinned FSB's being strong than all the other alternatives. If someone could elaborate on that and it would be appreciated.

My understanding is that they're pinned through notches in the BBL and that prevents the gas block from moving.

Screwed on gas blocks - even if you use loctite - can move as they heat up and expand or if they get a good knock... turning your semi into a single shot.

I don't think its too much of a concern for target practice... but for two-way shooting ranges its probably not good to have your gasblock moving around...

I have full length handguards on both my [ 14.5" and 16" ] AR 15 "carbines".
The longer handguards pick up the FM radio waves better ... even without my tinfoil hat on, the voices don't have as much background static.
[;{)

OH yeah, the longer handguards also allow me to mount the Eotech on top wayyyy out front, a lka "scout" concept, with a normal short eye relief scope co-witnessed behind it.

And at the bottom, they allow a Vertical fore grip to mount far enough forward that I can open the action without taking off the VFG ... and I still have some room in front for the bipod.

Looking at the muzzle from a bad guy's point of view, front sight taper pins are punched out right to left.
