I am interested in adding an AK grip to my CZ858 which I understand requires removal of the grip plate. On my rifle the trigger guard is welded to the plate. I've read that you just need to grip the plate with some pliers and flex it until it breaks loose, though I don't want to bugger up the trigger guard.

Can anyone help guide me through doing this properly, or perhaps recommend someone that can do it for me?

No way to do this with out turning it into a Bubba for life.
Basicaly you need a dremil and a bunch of metal cutter disc's.

I fit an AK grip to mine with NO mods to the rifle. 5 min with a small file had a Tapco AK SAW grip fitted perfectly to my rifle. Pm me for pics, or I will post them later when I'm not on my phone

I've never heard of breaking off the trim with pliers. It might work or it might go terribly wrong, so I'd pay a gunsmith to do it. Any local gunsmith should be able to accomplish this simple modification. Just touch-up reblue the receiver afterwards. You could do this yourself with a Dremil if you have practiced cutting metal with one before.

An AK grip will fit inside the trim on the rifle as it is, if you file/grind/carve some of the grip material away. The AK grip screw is longer and of the same thread pattern as the one on the CZ858, but the grip nuts are not interchangeable because the AK grip nut is too large to fit through your receiver's square hole. Some plastic AK grips use a short bolt, such as the Hogue AK Rubber grip, to which I added a 'star' lock washer to hold it in better.

I don't like the original CZ858 grip because it is too short and the wrong angle. It causes my pinkie finger to slip off and dangle, while the metal trim digs into the web of my hand between the thumb and index finger. So I put an Israeli plastic grip on my rifle. It has the correct forward angle to avoid the trim digging into my hand. I replaced the short metric hex head screw with a phillips head screw from the hardware store to simplify possible field repairs.

So look for a good AK grip that fits your hand well but is not too thick on the top, so you won’t have to carve it up too much to fit it. The Tapco SAW grip looks like it has the correct angle but I’ve never tried it. I would avoid using a regular stock AK grip if possible, as they are too thin and short for many people and you have numerous other options available.

Bubba farmboy method:

A.Get the wood chisel/flat screwdriver out of your garage that you use to open paint cans and s**t like that.
B.use the wood chisel thingy to GENTLY pry off the plate. It should come clean off the rivet in the middle without issue.
C.Flex it all the way up to the trigger guard, take pliers and twist each side gently till it snaps off. If it doesnt want to snap off, cut it off with the dremel/grinder
D.Carefully dremel off the excess.

Ive done mine and my buddies like this, except instead of dremeling off the excess i just used the wood chisel and a hammer to cut off the last bits around the trigger guard, but i did it on my tailgate without the joy of powertools, so if you care about your finish, obviously use a dremel.

Taking the plate off is really easy, I just pushed and pulled at mine with pliars till it came of and dremmelled away any left over bits. This was some time ago, if I had it to do again now I'd probably leave the plate on and just file out a grove in the grip to make the grip fit firmly. I fine with my AK grip there is some play that has been hard to get rid of.

Thanks for all the advice fellas. I think I'll leave the grip plate if I can modify the grip itself to fit. I would much rather damage a $30 grip than a $700 rifle.
