Removing Herters Muzzzle brake

Gentlemen, a 270 does not really need a brake, but this one has one, and I would like to get rid of the noise. It has a set screw which I have removed, and I have screwed out the nose piece of it, but I have not yet got it off the barrel. Suggestions are welcome. thanks

I guess I could weld a nut to it and put the impact on it, (joking) I will probably turn it off in the lathe.

Put a tight-fitting wrench on the flats of the body, and turn it off the barrel. The set screw was to establish (and maintain) the correct orientation, rather than turn up against a shoulder. I removed one from a 308 Norma Magnum a year ago, and it was threaded almost to an interference fit.

Thanks Ted, mine is round, and the flats were on an end that screwed into the body of the brake I guess I will put the barrel in a barrel vise and a pipe wrench on the brake, it is not that valuable of a part to worry about saving.

So the flats are on the nosepiece. Now, I am trying to remember how I took the one off the 308NM.

The nose piece threads were glued on mine, perhaps they were on yours as well and everything came off at once. I just did not get that lucky. Welding on a nut and using the impact is looking better all the time. with my luck I would screw the barrel out.

A strap wrench might move it. If you don't have one, a loop of poly rope and a bar works well. I have actually removed the barrel from a Mauser using that trick.

And KROIL. That stuff will break almost anything!

Maybe a bit of heat on the brake with a heat gun or hair dryer?
Get it to stretch some?

If the previous owner epoxied/Red Lock-tited it on simply heat the brake with a lightly with a propane blowtorch and it should come off with a wrench.

Doesn't anyone have a hacksaw? You are going to have to deal with the threads anyway...
