Removing lead in BPCR

try a 50/50 mix of common houshold hydrogen peroxide and vinegar. Don't leave it in more then 5 minutes and be sure to wipe up any spills on your barrel. I use this mixture along with a chamber plug. I simply plug the chamber and put the rifle in a vise with the barrel pointing up. Add the mixture and let it sit. You may want to watch it closely as it does tend to foam up a bit.
i don't want to change the direction here but, with a proper fitting bullet, soft cast, proper black powder lube, proper gun management, you should not get any fouling that can't be wiped up with a quick pass of a dry patch, every string or so. If you are using smokeless powder all bets are off!!
A baking soda solution would neutralize any remaining acid , then oil to prevent any rust. I have used the 50/50 hydrogen peroxide/vunegar solution to remove a build up of lead in a .357 cylinder that had fired a lot of .38 special cartridges, it worked well. It is supposed to affect bluing but I did not soak the cylinder, I just ran a very wet patch through, let it sit for 5/10 minutes then cleaned with a brass brush, then I soaked the cylinder in a water baking soda solution ,then flushed with very hot water and wiped dry , then oiled. I have heard of using strands of copper off of a chore boy scouring pad wrapped around brass brush. The copper is softer than the barrel and harder than the lead. I have used this method to polish up a shotgun barrel and remove plastc residue left from shot wads, but I have never used it to remove lead. The rifle is a very old BPCR in 1-22 left hand twist. I am trying to get the last of some very old lead out of the barrel.
When i started rifling could barely be seen.Now the rifling looks reasonably strong. When i started removing lead the patches would bind in tight spots in the barrel. Now they pass through fairly evenly, but am now getting lead slivers. Just trying to speed the process up. I am above 6 hrs.in the cleaning process.
When the rifling looked decent took the old girl out and shot a couple of groups with winchester brass,70 grains goex ffg,030 wad and a 555grain bullet.Bullets are the MTChambers .459 at 30-1.
Next time out it will be with a perfectly clean barrel. We all know how it is when you just have to go out and shoot the old girl for the first time. Hell even the wrinkles on my forehead where smiling.

Groups where a good solid 2-2 1/2 inches at a hundred.

Disregard everything i said.....i thought you were shooting a newer gun and getting leading as you went along. Hopefully the barrel will be smooth under all that or you may be in for more leading. What a great thrill though, getting an old one shooting, and with real Black Powder, congrats.....Ben
