I was very lucky lately... I finally found an unrefurb SVT-38 bolt carrier to go with my SVT-38 (which had an SVT-40 bolt carrier).

I also found an unrefurb SVT-40 bolt carrier to replace an SVT-40 refurb plum bolt (I know you can remove the blueing but they also grind the markings in the refurb process).

Both bolt carriers have a little bit of rust "inside"/under the bolt carrier.

Questions:

  1. How would you remove the rust without damaging the silver finish (not even sure it can be damaged)?
  2. On one of the carrier the seller wrote the price with a black marker on it. He said to remove it with nail varnish remover. Is it OK to use that without damaging the carrier?

I will post pictures before/after when home.

Thanks!

The first method I would try for removing the rust is to use an old toothbrush and toothpaste! If that doesn't work, at least it probably won't harm anything.

Oil it after, of course.

1) I would try fine steel wool and oil for the rust, rubbing gently to avoid scuffing the surface finish.

2) Varsol will also remove that marker. Can't comment on what will happen to the finish, though. If it is paint it may come off, if it is steel then it will be fine.

Fine steelwool should remove rust, there'e no finish on silver carrier, the steel is only polished "in the white"

|No need for steel wool near a gun. Use bronze or brass wool. Its available at grovery stores, its for cleaning high end cookware. It is much more forgiving, and can even be used on a blued surface.

Would CLR do the trick without damaging anything?

Would the nail varnish remover would damage anything (to remove the marker markings)?
