Removing Old Russian Shellac.

What the best way? I have a 1943 run of the mill mosin and I will not be selling it ever, but I still do not want to damage the stock worse than it is. Just want to clean the flaky shellac off and maybe recoat in something appropriate.


Is it true the way to go is 0000 steel wool and Acetone?

Just buy some Shellac Crystals (either red or amber depending on the color of your stock) disolve in Alcohol and redo your stock. No need to strip or sand the wood, the old Shellac finish will blend with the new one to form a new fresh finish.
 
Hmm... that seems like a simple way to go. So even though my stock is all flakey and rough the alcohol will disolve it and make it all blend in?

Yes, you will save yourself a lot of work and you won't spoil the collector's value of your rifle.

That I will do, do you just brush it on? I'll have to find another source since I live in northern alberta where we just got FM radio a year ago. Maybe Rona or Home hardware.
 
Here's what happened to a really rough looking SKS after the treatment described by JP. When I got the rifle the shellac was flaking in some areas, and where there was enough shellac left it had a "orange peel" look. Yuck. Didn't take much work, and the result was a significant improvement.
