Removing paint from a USGI stock?

Recently bought a USGI M14 stock off the EE, wondering if there was a safe way to strip it down to the origial "brown" finish so i can repaint in a different colour.

I would use a generous amount of paint stripper ,then use a putty knife to scrape of the goop . Rinse it off and then use steel wool to finish it off .
Are you filling in the cut out for the selector switch..if so jb weld works good .I used the KRYLON camo paint from crappy tire and then a few coats of satin clear after to protect it.

how do i clean out the checkering with out damaging it? same thing?

a really stiff brush while to stripper is all gooey should do it
