I acquired a Mk.1 S&J extension (knurled base, not milled notches) for my 870, its parkerized and doesn't match the rest of the gun. I want to strip the park, and rust blue it. I assume the best way to strip the park is abrasive blasting, i have a small handheld blast gun and AO around here somewhere.

The real question, if I blast the outside but leave the interior parked, will that resist the rust bluing solution and associated processing? Simon, if you see this and have anything to add, your input is always appreciated.

Can’t you just paint it? Removing the parkerizing compromises the corrosion resistance, and abrasive blasting it will leave it looking much the same as parkerizing, just a little darker.

I don’t think the blast and blue will be the solution to a matching finish. Try it on some scrap first.

Yes Simon, more knurled please

I should've clarified. I'm not going straight from blasting to bluing, I know that would be matte bluing. I want to blast the park, then I can cludge something up so I can spin it to polish it to whatever grit paper.

Yeah you would need to soda or sand blast then polish smooth. I probably spin it with 600 or greater grit. Hard part would be the knurling. Might have to use a wire wheel, so it doesn't get rid of the knurling.

So I realize the AO media I have isn't AO, its iron based and is super coarse and gonna remove a bunch of material and take forever to polish. What types of media are more suitable for just removing finish, especially with only a spot blaster. I might just score a box of glass bead off the 'zon, they have some fine grit stuff. Princess has glass bead and crushed glass, but 50lbs bag takes up a lot of space and its fairly coarse.

Try some crushed walnut media, Princess Auto has 50lb sacs but might have smaller bags for all I know. Alternatively pet stores carry it as reptile bedding and should have smaller ammounts, although I know price per volume it’s hard to beat the PA bag. I use it in my dry tumbler to clean brass.

Blasted it with extra fine glass bead and polished to 800 by chucking a piece allthread in the drill press using the end hole to cinch it tight. Nice and shiny and ready for rusting.

You know what, for my first go at it with household bluing solution, i'm actually incredibly pleased. Its by no means perfect, but it matches the gun beautifully.
