Standard industrial Rule is punch it out from the LEFT . Therefore install from the RIGHT.
Most sights that I have measured do have a taper to match the above rule. Many sight blanks
also have a mark on the bottom to indicate the side to start into the barrel.
I just measured a NEW Lyman blank. "Marked End" = .370 " . The other end = ".380 "

Depending how tight it is lay the barrel across your knees and drift it with the punch. If it's stubborn the forend may need removed and a padded vice.Sounds like the sight saw it your way.

History tells that it's always left to right, yet there is no taper in most dovetails.

But very often there is on the dovetail of the sight. Almost every sight I've drifted out got looser as it passed the half way mark.

And yeah, it's push out to the right as being held to shoot. Not from the barrel.

bearhunter , why take off the fore stock ?

I did drift the sight off with a brass punch , no sweat skwerl

He has probably seen a lot of stock dings from careless removal of the sight... a slip of the punch and the hammer...

I've seen everything from split fore stocks to those gouged by vice jaws, when people removed that rear sight.

I'm glad it worked out for you.
