I have a rem 700 that has a leupold front base on with the two screws loctited in. I was able to remove the rear base but when I went to remove the front one I found both screw heads stripped. They are a hex head.

Do I need to pay a gunsmith to take them out??

Any suggestions?? thanks:(

Carefully drill out the screw with a bit slightly smaller than the hole (use rear hole for size). Whatever part of the screw that is left should just collapse and peel out with a small pick or brush.

I bought a set of the Mastercraft extrators and have used them on 4 scope mounts already. They worked awesome, wel worth the $$$$. I used to drill them out but there's too much opportunity to slip and tear something up.

Drive a suitably sized Robertson bit into the stripped out screw (probably a number two). Heat the receiver ring with a heat gun or carefully with a propane torch. Remove the screw. Regards, Bill

You could also try what is called "easy out" taps.

Different sizes and styles are commonly available at auto-shop supply houses.

The method I described is not a "this should work" solution but is the technique I have used for years to remove hundreds of stripped out allen head screws. Sometimes it's a no.2. Sometimes it's a no.1 robertson but either way it always works. Regards, Bill.
