From the viewpoint of damaging the barrel I would never use steel to pound out a stuck bullet . Aluminum is far softer than steel generally speaking, and that's why gunsmiths use aluminum inserts on vise jaws to hold rifle actions they are working on.I would use a brass rod. No wood, it breaks and jams, no Aluminum, Aluminum oxide is hard stuff, and not good for your bore at any time. Id use steel before I'd use aluminum.
