It's kind of late to be asking now, but following my recent hasty scope installation so I could try out my new rifle, I'm wondering how more skilled and experienced scope installers go about removing old dried blue Loctite, or rather Uncle Mike's 'Guntite,' from the bolts and threaded holes on scope mounts? Leaving some in, I found it was really hard to correctly estimate the torque force I was actually applying.

Always start with clean fasteners when reapplying loctite. It will make for a correct torque application.

Just use a fine brush like a bore brush or a stiff brass brush and stroke away from you as you rotate the screw to clean the threads.

Hope this helps.

All the best, Carl

I use some propanol or something stronger and a small brush or cloth and toothpick to remove all the old Loctite in the screw holes. It takes a bit of work but eventually you will get them cleaned up and good for re-installation.

I considered heat to remove it, but chickened out. It's a heck of a lot more tenacious than it used to be, the stuff now dries like diamond only holds on better.

You could chase the threads with a tap. Brownells should have what you need or you can order on from KBC Tools . Just make sure you know the right size and tread pitch.
