Removing the rail on an 870 Tactical

Im looking to really streamline my 870 Express Tactical.

Its the XS Ghost Ring model.


Ive already replaced the Breacher Choke with a Skeet Choke, and now want to remove the Picatinny Rail on the receiver.

I don't use a scope and found a red dot distracted me, and the rail itself seems to get caught on everything.

- Anyone done this?

- So to do this, is there anything special I need to know?

- Is this just screwed on in place or is there an adhesive of some type?

- When it is off, what kind of screws or plugs do I need to fill the tapped holes?

Receivers are drilled and tapped for the rail. So, screws need to come out. I doubt if they have thread locker on them. Use the correct fitting hollow ground screwdriver.

Plugging the holes ... filler screws are ideal. You can try Brownells once you know the rail screws size and thread pitch. They have several to choose from.

Any decent gun shop should have the filler plugs. Most places install scopes for people and remove the plugs to install the mounts. They would probably just give them to you just buy some ammo or something.

Casey or anyone else, what rear sight would be recommended if I wanted a Ghost Ring style, but with the steel protective wings?

Id like something that allows me to keep the factory installed front Ghost Ring sight.

Or will this allow me to keep the front sight?

I have the wilson sights pictured. If you can measure the existing front post height, I will measure the wilson front sight and you should be able to get an idea if they are in the same ballpark
 
You could use either the Wilson Combat rear sight (as pictured above) or the Vang Comp Rear sight. Either will require drilling and tapping of the reciever.
