I cut it off with the cutting wheel on a dremel tool
then i blended the cut off section into the barrel with a file and cold blued it. Oh yes what kind of bayonet are you cutting off, blade or spike? I am looking to buy a blade style.
Wrap some tape around the barrel or a damp cloth and it will keep the hot metal from the cutting wheel from marking the finish. Don't ask how i know that it will mark the finish LOL
I also removed the lug, but decided not to cut it off completely, but leave the piece that holds the rod. Dremel cutoff disk to cut the end of the lug, then file down to round shape, finish with sandpaper & reblue. Here is how it looks now:

I took the whole front sight assembly off mine. The bayonet unscrewed easily. I took the front sight to work and milled the brackets for the bayonet and the cleaning rod off. Took about 10 minutes.
At one point I was thinking of removing the bayonet and putting a doo hickie reminiscent of the doo-hickie on the barrels of MP 40 submachine guns. Because bubba never rests you know!
I don't know about cutting it off. I just think there might be a time you might want a bayonet. Besides the lug doesn't look that bad and you can use it to mount a bi-pod. I left the lug on mine, you know, just in case.
I had a nice UHF bayo for my Garand but the keyway for the lug was worn out or something. It bothered me jiggling back and forth on there so I sold it. I agree it is a 'form follows function' thing and the M-1 bayos have a 'presence' that is impossible to dismiss.
PS, I just had an insane idea, instead of grinding off the bayonet lug that is already there, just use it to affix an 'SMLE' style bayonet mount. It would be relatively simple to improvise something like that. As a bonus, it would be more solid, you would not have to grind off the lug, and it would add more mass to the end of your SKS barrel. I wish I had time to work on all these crazy ideas I get.
