id like to know if a remy 700 SPS in .308 is a good choice for precision on long range target ????

Might be a good base action for a custom project.... Just have your 'smith put on a Heavy Barrel in your choice of ctg & barrel length. And you're away to the races... ;) :D

If I were you I would hunt around for a vsf if you can find a shop with em. Nice and light with the flutes. I love mine, and I have fired the SPS as well. Or a VS? They are damn nice. If I knew they made them left handed I might have gotten one, but the Vsf barrel is so rigid, and it does make it slightly lighter (and cool's a bit faster). Now the only thing I am looking for is where tod bartell's lady friend is at.

FYI, fluting a barrel doesn't add to its rigidity, it takes away from it. Fluting offers cooling benefits by incresing the overall surface area of the barrel to disapate heat and reduces the weight of the barrel to keep the stress on the action at a minimum.

On a typical 5.5 countour varmint weight HB the barrel weight reduction benefits are relatively insignificant because the action isn't being stressed to the point where it's a dtriment to accuracy.

It's all in the L.C.F.

FYI I didnt say a fluted barrel is more rigid than one that is not. Thats contrary to physics. I said "but the Vsf barrel is so rigid, and it does make it slightly lighter (and cool's a bit faster)." Which says nothing about the comparison of the two, but that for a fluted barrel it is so rigid. Now that thats settled..... on with the choices.

The stock isn't very good on the rifle either.. I think you are starting to get the idea eh. SPS probably not the best for precision shooting.. It is a good starter rifle, but not for the longer range precision.

For about the same price, you could look into a Savage 10fple or something.

I use a 700LTR and love it, but it is a bit more expensive.

Mick McPhee in Kamloops is a 30 cal custom barrel manufacturer and precision gunsmith that could work wonders with the gun if you have the $$ and the interest.

The SPS is a hunting rifle and not accurate enough for serious "precision" shooting (expect about 1 MOA at best) but the actions are unlimited in future potential at a good cost
