I mailed my renewal forms for my nonrestricted 4 weeks ago. I only have 2 weeks to go. I'm looking for a plan B just in case I don't receive my renewal in time. My first question is...what will happen if my PAL expires. Will I have to liquidate my firearms. Am I allowed (in legal terms) to let a fellow PAL store my small stash.

You're okay, but most people would advise double that lead time. Because bureaucracy. Everybody remember that.

No! Even before, the police didn't go knocking on doors at the stroke of midnight, except in very rare and particularly special cases.

The most recent changes to the Firearms Act, brought in as C42 in the previous Parliament, set a grace period of 6 months for expired licences (to account for forgetfulness or bureaucracy). However, this part was not brought into force (for no reason other than stupidity) before the governing party changed. Even so, it reflects the will of Parliament, as well as the general way things were operating anyway.

Problem is, you shouldn't take them out of the house. Let's say you're out hunting (otherwise legally) and get checked, they *will* lay an un-Licensed Possession charge if the system doesn't show a valid PAL.

Yes absolutely. Licensed guy can take them any time, and Store them properly (or im-properly; it's not your offence at that point), no Transfer needed.

If you had Restricted, it should be called in as a temporary Storage location change to keep it 100.

Interesting, many of us understood that there was a 6 month grace period now.
