Does anyone know where a hunter can rent horses. It must be around the Nanton, High River, Claresholm and Okotoks area (in Alberta of course). I've searched on line, however, could not find anything. Help would be appreciated! Thanks!

I knew an outfitter that tried that for a few extra bucks but turned into a fiasco for him. I knew him quite well and was hunting in his area when I discovered 4 of his horses tied in the bush, they appeared to be in somewhat of a neglected state (this was not a typical situation for his horses to be in at all) so we fed & watered them for the last 4 days of our hunt, delivered them to a horse camp not far away that would continue to care for them. I contacted the owner when I returned to a phone booth and told him what we had found. I turns out he had rented the horses & tack ( there was none with the horses when we found them) for a two week hunting trip and they abandoned his animals mid-hunt and never contacted him at all. h never seen them or his tack again.

Yeah.

Ever hear the expression "Beat it like a rented mule" ?

The odds of getting out of eyesight with someone' horses, without also having same someone's guy or gal along with, are almost zero.

Hire a packing Guide/Outfitter and relax a little during the evenings, instead of doing horse maintenance.

Cheers

I have no idea if he will go into Alberta but there is Stan Walchuk, Blue Creek Outfitting, who does rent horses. He's out of McBride, BC.

Check out:

Dewy Matthews - Anchor D Guiding & Outfitting Ltd.

He is inBlack Diamond.

He took me and three buddies into Kananaskis a few years ago and dropped us off for a week and came back right on time and picked us up.
Good guy.
I doubt he will would rent you horses for the reasons already mentioned in this thread but he might be willing to pack your gear in for you.
Google him for contact info.

I'm going to second the opinion that anyone who has good enough horses for what you need isn't going to let them out of their sight. It will be just as cost effective to have them assist with the moves and enjoy your hunt without worrying about the rest of the logistics involved.

Dad rented horses and gear from an outfitter for a pink mountain trip 10 years or so ago. Horses were broke down and worn out, gear was in disrepair and had chunks of blood and meat stuck to it.
Check the stock out before you arrive and are ready to roll if you do find someone to rent you animals.

More to horse hunting than just getting on and riding down the trail, a whole lot of maintenance issues to deal with. if you're gonna pack, especially meat, it's a different ball game again :)

Myself, along with my 75 year old uncle are experienced people with horses. I've guided for 8 years on horses and my uncle has horsemanship, 10 fold than I. Wishful to have horses that will pack out wild big game. My uncle has many horses, however, he lives in South Mountain, (near Ottawa) Ontario.
