Repainting Boyds Tacticool Stock?

I am about to order a tacticool stock for my Savage Mk.II, but it is only available in black. Has anyone painted over the factory finish or stripped it and then refinished the wood? How did it work out? Pictures of the finished product?

My preference would be to have a tacticool in one of their colourful laminates, but they won't do custom orders. Even if all they have to do is put a laminate blank in place of the tacticool blank on the machine.

I've never seen one stripped to the wood (and I suspect it wouldn't be pretty under there - knowing it'll be painted, they probably don't use their best wood blanks for the Tacticools - I could be wrong about that, of course...), but lots of guys over on Rimfirecentral have done some pretty impressive camo jobs on 'em.

If I were going to paint one, I'd paint over the existing finish, as it would give great "tooth" for paint, is already tough as nails, and the pebbled finish gives good grip, even when the stock is wet.

Personally, I love my Body's tactical-black finish, but lots of people like a little more color in their stocks...

Just my $.02' worth....

Its laminate beneath the paint, but very ordinary looking judging from viewing the action inlet area. You never now if there might be a lot of ugly glue or filler if you stripped it.

I would only strip it if the factory finish was no good for painting over. Either way, it would be painted a solid colour that hides the wood grain. I also expect the wood is pretty ugly, given that they paint over it.

I will go surf a bit on rimfirecentral and see what I can find. As for paint, is Krylon still the preferred paint to cover the Boyds finish?

Thanks,
Mark

I have seen some pictures of the tacticool stripped to the bare wood. Its a regular laminate, same as what they use in all their other stocks, just not dyed. Also, removing the butt pad from my tacticool I can confirm that it is laminate

The factory textured finish is actually fine to paint over. If you're looking at using Krylon, I would say it does just fine. My tacticool came in black and I painted my own rendition of some camo right over top. So far its holding up really well, although not that heavily abused. Just allow for a good amount of time for the paint to cure. I had a thread running on my rifle, have a look. I'm the OP

Thanks for the link, that paint looks great. Was it Krylon?

If I end up with something like this I will be quite happy with it. I see you used one of my heavy bottom plates on this one, hope it works well for you.

I've only bought one for a ruger and a CZ. Didn't look into Marlin. Do they all have that prohibition now?

That is: "International orders OVER $100 will not be processed."

I just ordered the Tacticool for my Mk.II and the transaction went though OK. At least the checkout procedure went fine and I got an email receipt...

Good to know. It didn't specify on the website. Thanks for the info.

My Boyd's MkII Tacticool (recent purchase) was $92, so, under the $100 limit (methinks they did this on purpose...good for us...likely to stay that way, too, as they sell a LOT of these stocks into Canada). Taxes, duty shipping, etc. are not calculated into the $100 limit. Of course, if you want to purchase a trigger guard, etc., that has to be done on a separate order to avoid exceeding the limit.

It was Krylon that I used on that one, and it was surprisingly simple for that paint job. Paint the stripes, then sponge paint with a torn up piece of real sea sponge.

And yes, the heavy bottom metal was purchased from you. I had to open up the mag opening slightly towards the rear of the metal. But, you warned me this might need to be done and was hit and miss with certain rifles, so no big deal. About 10 minutes with a file and it was gtg. It's a big improvement over the tinfoil peice that comes with it and will certainly recommend anyone to pick one up from you.
