Repairing a Burst Black Powder Barrel ?

IF the stock is sound and the lock sparks, a replacement barrel would be an option. Matching the contour would be interesting. So would the three barrel retaining bolts. And getting a new barrel that long would be an interesting challenge. But because the forend is not full length, a replacement barrel would not need to be as long s the original.

We've all seen slicked up, repolished "coach guns" offered for sale. It would be a shame to rework this piece into such junk.

Any work/restoration should be done respectfully - otherwise just leave it as is and hang it on the wall.

None of those things would be a problem. In the picture it APPEARS to be octagon to round. That is no problem to duplicate. Octagon to round barrels in 42-46" lengths are pretty standard and, while some measurements would have to be taken before ordering, there is a good chance that an "off the shelf" barrel can be easily modified to match the original. Barrel lugs for the retaining wedges are a piece of cake as is soldering on the thimbles properly. I would rebarrel that thing in a heartbeat and use it. I would keep the original barrel even though it is pooched. However, this statement can not be overstated and bears repeating, "Any work/restoration should be done respectfully - otherwise just leave it as is and hang it on the wall."

One that applies to modern firearms and two 18” is the minimum you can cut a manual action gun down too. Antiques I do not think this applies I can buy a brand new blanket gun kit and I’m pretty sure since it’s flintlock it’s good to go.

you can cut or modify the barrel to 18" (18.5 if semiauto)
